B&B "Boutique" Bargains in 2009
Byfords Posh B&B, Café and Deli in Holt, near the North Norfolk Coast is one of the more unusual places we've heard about lately - part dining establishment, part boutique accommodations, part village street! We like the looks of it and we like their Winter Warmer rates even more. Weekdays (Sunday to Thursday) January through March (excluding Valentines Day and February School Vacation), book at the B&B rate and get £22.50 per person toward dinner thrown in for free. A Good Bet for a Bed in Scotland
The Tontine, a family run hotel in the lovely Scottish Borders town of Peebles, is well known locally for its simple, good value cuisine and comfortable accommodations. Our spies in the north have recently reported back that the service there is also more than praiseworthy. Built in 1808, the hotel overlooks the River Tweed, 23 miles south of Edinburgh.
Bed and breakfast at £55 per person is a good deal, but the bed, breakfast and dinner rate - with access to the hotel's full a la carte menu - is an especially good deal. Advertised at £77.50 per person on the hotel's website, we've heard about deals for considerably less. Check it out by visiting the Tontine website, or by telephoning +44 (0)1721 720 892.
Wondering about that "Bet"? The clue is in the hotel's name. A Tontine was a kind of bet on life in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The prize, often a contested inheritance, went to the last member of the tontine left alive. We guess that The Tontine in Peebles was the prize in one such macabre bet.
Last Minute Bargains for Devon Vacation Rentals
Can't find any toads among Toad Hall Cottages' last minute deals in the West Country. We just heard about two biggish cottages in South Devon that are going for a song. Gara Bridge Cottages is offering Moonriver - a posh converted barn that sleeps 6 (plus two dogs) until Christmas for £310 per week (£133 off) and Mulberry, a beamed cottage for up to 7 for only £286 the week (£122 off). When you consider that the cottages share an indoor, heated swimming pool and private river fishing for salmon and trout, the price is right even without the discount. In case you think London has the only top nosh in the UK, two award winning seafood restaurants in Fife are offering special (and specially-priced)menus to prove you wrong.

Warm Up Latin Style in Brighton
Las Iguanas, Brighton's Latin American restaurant and bar on Jubilee Street, is offering the kind of midweek special that warms the parts other offers rarely reach. Dine midweek (Sunday-Thursday) until December 31 and enjoy 20% off your bill. The Great British Heritage Pass, offered by VisitBritain to visitors from outside the United Kingdom, is one of the best deal's I've seen in a long time. For one flat fee -covering 4, 7, 15 or 30 days - pass holders get full admission to almost 600 different sites; family passes, for two adults and three kids under 16 are available too. Good value? Well VisitBritain compiled the cost of single adult tickets to the top 15 UK sites. The price came to £141.60. The cost of a
Great British Heritage Pass for 15 days was £52 - that's a savings of £89. Even if you spread those 15 site visits over a month long pass (£70), you'd still save £71.60. That sounds like a great deal to me.
